Mental Health for Teens

Updated: Oct 16, 2020

Everyday, teenagers quietly suffer with mental health problems that they don't make known. Teens are afraid of telling other people how they feel because they feel as if they are burdening others with their problems. Although not everybody suffers with mental health problems, most teenagers will suffer from at least one type of mental health issue at some point in their life. Teenagers often try to keep their problems to themselves because we teach ourselves that if we tell other people how we are feeling emotionally, we will be burdening them and trying to make them feel bad. Signs that a teenager is suffering from a mental health issue is when a teen will: constantly sleep, try to be alone constantly, or are constantly in a sour or depressing mood. They will often not want to get out of bed, stop trying to communicate with friends, or stop completing simple everyday tasks.

Teenagers will often do everything they can to hide how they really feel. For instance, you may see a teen that is always smiling and happy but when they leave a social environment, they feel gloomy and down. Teenagers are some of the most confusing people to understand because no matter how many times somebody asks us what is wrong, we often lie and say that everything is fine. One thing that often helps teenagers feel better is writing things down becuase it is a way of expressing how you feel without actually telling anybody. It can often be a welcoming way to get weight off your shoulders and feel less alone. Next time you feel alone and as if you have nobody to turn to, try getting out a pencil and piece of paper and writing down how you feel. It can truly be a way of expressing everything you need to get off of your chest.
